Why Haiti?

Shortly after the earthquake, I posted a video tiled "ATHEIST TO THEISTS: Why Haiti?" and a concerned viewer from Haiti replied to me with the below, unedited email.

let me explain...
i'm from haiti but was adopted by European family at a very young age.
by now i have visited haiti and my family several times, and i feel really connected to them... except on 1 thing... religion.
the level of their devotion is incomparable i think to us and european standards.
they live in horrendous situations, and still thank god for it like every single 5 min of the day.

and then yes, the earthquake... horrible, my family and friends have been hit like simply everybody else...
7 people died i know ,among them children, and all but 1 became homeless.

one would think now they would feel god has abandoned them...
well hell no, they still thank god every day they survived!!! and probably their believe is now even stronger as before.

to me, atheist minded, its so painfull to see, people you actually care about, suffer so deep , so hard, unimaginable, and thank god for it every day????....
and simply accept there lifetime suffer is all pat of "a bigger plan"...

it doesnt make any sense at all, was it in gods plan to allow millions of people suffer, and live in agony and pain, wipe the infrastructure of this nation of the face of the earth throwing them almost back in to the stone age,...fail to see the bigger plan in this, and like you said very well...
if you where almighty, loved them so much and had the power to stop it. your kind of a twisted sadist to allow it to happen anyway!

keep up the good work, and know atheist are spread throughout the world, and growing in numbers day by day!
